In 1985, Yao Xianping left the Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica, a Chinese Academy of Sciences with superior research conditions, to work at the Hangzhou Chemical Research Institute. Faced with the poor quality of non-wood fiber raw materials at that time, and the large number of impurities, the low quality of paper produced, the difficulty in copying, and the serious problem of “three wastes”, Yao Xianping resolutely embarked on the path to overcome this problem. He and his wife gave up the rest day and worked hard for three years. After the project's pilot test was passed, he headed into the poor Pan'an mountainous area for nine years. In the past nine years, he had worked as an operator, ran sales, and perhaps it was this tenacity that supported him in his successful development of the first paper-based starch product—“a special reinforcing agent for non-wood fibers”. "MSG needs only a little bit to make the whole dish delicious, but papermaking modified starch also requires only a little bit of it to greatly improve the quality of the paper." After that, there are more than 30 starch surface sizing agents and so on. The modified starch products for papermaking have been successfully developed, and a continuous production line that can “eat” ordinary starch and then “spitting” out more than a dozen different types of modified starch products has been put into operation, and Yao Xianping also has the title of “Paper Making Seasoning Master”. .

“In order to engage in scientific research, we must pay attention to independent development and technological innovation, while institutional innovation also promotes scientific and technological innovation and mechanism innovation, and accelerate the industrialization of scientific and technological achievements.” Under the leadership of Yao Xianping, Hangzhou Chemical Research Institute has obtained invention patents since its transformation. There are 6 items of new products at national level, 13 items of multi-level scientific and technological achievements, and more than 20 new products have already been industrialized. Two high-tech enterprises established by investment have achieved remarkable social and economic benefits. One of them, with an annual output of 50,000 tons, is the largest papermaking modified starch manufacturing base in China. The amount of corn consumed in production can ensure the normal income of 50,000 farmers. This wholly-owned production base with independent intellectual property rights, last year exceeded 100 million yuan in revenue, per capita income of more than 10 million yuan.

Despite such impressive achievements, Yao Xianping still said that compared with the strategic goals of innovative countries, he and the Institute of Chemical Industry under his leadership have invested in science and technology, basic conditions for innovation platforms, the number and level of top talent, and There are significant gaps in the achievements and levels of independent intellectual property rights. He disclosed that their goal is to build an innovative professional institution and that by 2015, the industrialization revenue will reach 2 billion yuan.
