Zero accident is to ensure the safety of employees
SCHOTT was founded in 1884 by Ernst Abbe and Otto Schott, of which Otto Schott is known as the “father of modern glassâ€. Since its establishment 120 years ago, SCHOTT has achieved its leading position in the industry. So far, SCHOTT has developed into a multinational high-tech group company headquartered in Mainz, Germany. Its main products include household appliances, pharmaceutical bottle packaging, solar energy, optics, electronics and automotive industries. It is worth noting that almost all products and solutions offered by SCHOTT are based on specialty glass and related specialty materials. As a manufacturing company invested by SCHOTT Group in China, SCHOTT Glass Technology (Suzhou) Co., Ltd. was put into operation in April 2002.
According to China's statement, SCHOTT is definitely a "people-oriented" company. SCHOTT believes that taking good care of employees is the company's greatest social responsibility. The reporter learned from the interview that since SCHOTT mainly produces special glass products, ensuring the safety of employees by ensuring production safety has become a top priority.
According to reports, SCHOTT had only one very small and not serious security incident in the past year. The accident was a random worker who had inspected a glass bottle while inspecting a glass bottle. Mr. Hu Mingyue, Director of Human Resources of SCHOTT Glass Technology (Suzhou) Co., Ltd., briefed reporters on the handling of accidents: Do accident analysis, find the root cause of the accident, and make preventive measures to remedy the situation. “We changed the method of operation and we can eliminate such accidents in the future. The female workers inspected a glass bottle. The original mode of operation was to use one hand or both hands to check. After this accident, we specified that Use both hands and point outwards."
In fact, the method of operation of injured female workers is also standard, and Schott had never had such a situation before, this is an accident. However, in order to prevent accidents, Schott also modified the operating specifications. Shorter also notified the foreign branch of the accident and reminded them to make adjustments.
Hu Mingyue said that female workers’ injuries were treated as work-related injuries. The state-provided insurance Schott has given employees, in addition to the purchase of commercial insurance for employees, to ensure that employees can get enough compensation in the event of an accident.
“What we can do is to strengthen training. Second, we need to make clear provisions on the operational procedures and standards of employees. Third, for whatever reason, we must not make concessions on security,†said Volker Haeusler.
SCHOTT puts safety production regulations on every production floor. Employees must be familiar with these rules before they can take up posts. The company will never make concessions on security and ensure that it achieves the goal of zero accidents. Volker Haeusler believes that Schott has a very good security system. He goes deep into each team, opens safety meetings every two weeks, and solves problems in time. At the same time, SCHOTT posted an accident report outside the Suzhou factory. Past pedestrians can also see it as a supervision.
Schott also implemented "zero security incidents" through some incentives. Schott has a clear reward system that considers multiple indicators such as safety and performance. Schott also set up a "hundred days no accident" contest, with the increase in the number of accident-free days, implementation of incremental rewards. Last year, SCHOTT achieved a record of 180 days without any accidents. For this reason, the company held a celebration, went out for dinner and watched movies collectively. Shorter had previously organized collective tourism as a reward.
Environmental protection is also safe
Schott’s corporate social responsibility is also reflected in environmental protection. In the minds of the average person, glass bottle manufacturers are highly polluting, but this does not seem to hold true at SCHOTT.
Ms. Margaret Conrad, Minister of Environment and Forestry of Germany's State of Lefka, inspected SCHOTT's Suzhou plant in 2004 and stated that SCHOTT China and SCHOTT's headquarters in Germany are very strict in terms of production engineering, process flow and environmental protection implementation standards. Consistent. According to reports, SCHOTT's factory in Suzhou only invested more than 30% of its total investment in environmental protection facilities. Michael Buenning, president of SCHOTT China, said that SCHOTT complies with all Chinese laws and regulations and wishes to establish SCHOTT's long-term interests in China.
Schott has an internal organization dedicated to environmental, safety and health issues. Since many of SCHOTT's factories are similar, the factories often communicate with each other. Schott also passed the British Lloyd's environmental safety certification. In terms of environmental and safety production, SCHOTT's global factories follow uniform standards.
Take the Pharmaceutical Packaging Business Unit of the SCHOTT Group as an example. This department is the world's leading supplier of injection drug packaging. It has more than 500 production lines in 11 production bases worldwide. It produces over 7 billion pieces of special glass tubes each year. Or polymer syringes, vials, ampoules, cassette bottles and other packaging. SCHOTT's manufacturing base operates according to GMP regulations and its products are fully compliant with the USP, EP, and JP international standards (the internationally recognized international quality standards for pharmaceuticals, dietary supplements, and other health products).
For glass manufacturing companies, safety and environmental protection are integrated in many ways. For example, in the production of glass bottles, some of the more dangerous chemicals are used. If these raw materials are used or stored improperly, they will both pollute the environment and affect personal safety.
Schott classified hazardous materials. The first category is "prohibition of use", which is strictly limited to this part of the raw material. The second category is “restricted useâ€. In the absence of better alternatives in the market, Short has minimized its use, and is only used as a transitional period, with new alternatives canceled immediately. Schott also has specific restrictions on the use of these raw materials in terms of method and quantity. The third category is "undesired", in the long-term continuous reduction in the amount of while looking for alternatives.
Short's innovation
Short has a complete emergency handling and early warning plan. It is Schott’s goal to continuously improve and maintain better standards of work and health. All SCHOTT production units have trained emergency personnel. Schott lets each employee receive training in three areas: emergency rescue, fire fighting, and evacuation.
SCHOTT requires each production unit to implement a safety accident monthly report system, and also requires each department or team meeting to begin with a safety topic.
On the basis of the statistics of “employeesâ€, SCHOTT also implemented the system of “effective working hoursâ€, marking the number of working hours or days lost due to accidents. According to Volker Haeusler, Short has spent 300,000 working days in the past three years (based on the number of employees working days) and only three days have been lost due to accidents. The company has a special agency to count these accident data, make analysis, and submit reports to the company.
For the Suzhou factory, Short has specialized management personnel and special emergency handling methods. Schott conducts one or two accident drills each year, while gradually reducing the use of hazardous materials in production.
Not only raw materials, Hu Mingyue said that all SCHOTT employees will analyze the factors that may affect the environment during their work. Each employee must write his own report to minimize some of the unfavorable factors in the environment.
SCHOTT Suzhou factory has passed ISO14000 certification. At the same time, they also have a good cooperation relationship with the Suzhou Environmental Protection Department and visit each other with other factories in Suzhou. Hu Mingyue said that SCHOTT receives the environmental protection model unit of Suzhou Hi-tech Zone every year. If Suzhou City or Jiangsu Province examines the environmental protection of enterprises, Schott has always been an exemplary model.
Just five years after the company was established, the two founders started cooperation with the Carl Zeiss Foundation, a name that nobody knows or knows about in the field of optical lenses. Volker Haeusler said that the Carl Zeiss Foundation has a strong sense of social responsibility. In the 1896 statute, it stipulated clearly the implementation of social standards such as occupational safety, health protection and environmental protection standards. So Schott began with strict requirements. There have been many achievements in social responsibility. Now many companies have made efforts in this area, and SCHOTT implemented it as early as 100 years ago. At present, SCHOTT has become one of the most socially responsible companies in the world.
