Remember the 3D printed running shoes that Adidas and the environmental group Parley for the Oceans jointly launched last year? This running shoe has two characteristics, one is the use of 3D printed midsole, and the second is the use of materials recycled from plastic garbage on the ocean. Recently, in San Francisco, a startup called Rothy has launched a similar product. Their shoes are woven from 3D yarns made from recycled plastic bottles. In addition, the company claims that its carbon-free soles, insoles and packaging are recyclable and fully recyclable when not needed.
It is understood that the uppers of these shoes are made of yarns woven from recycled plastic bottles and a carbon-free sole and insole. The company's 3D weaving process helps minimize the waste of traditional shoe manufacturing processes. Rothy said the shoe was the result of three years of research and product development and the first fashion shoe collection made using 3D seamless weaving.
The company claims that the yarns they use to weave the upper are made entirely from certified PET bottles. They removed the caps and labels on these recycled beverage bottles, heat-treated to process the filaments, and then turned into yarn. It is particularly worth mentioning that these yarns are treated with a wicking agent to help the feet absorb moisture and perspiration. The company claims that it takes about three recycled plastic bottles to make a breathable soft fiber upper.
Using a proprietary process, Rothy's machines weave these shoes into 3D shapes. The woven upper is then heat set using a last or a mold and then combined with the sole and the padded shoe to complete the entire shoe.
Roth currently offers two models (The Flat and The Point) and 17 different color combinations to choose from. And these shoes are also machine washable, but not too often. After the end of its useful life, each pair of shoes is recyclable. Consumers only need to download an online delivery form and send the shoes they need to recycle to Rothy's recycling partner PLUSfoam.
Rothy launched the eco-friendly shoes last month, and the two models, The Flat and The Point, retail for $125 and $145, respectively.
