Although DeviceNet entered China relatively late, it has been highly valued by relevant domestic departments and units for its outstanding advantages. On October 8, 2002, DeviceNet was approved as China National Standard GB/T18858.3-2002, and implemented on April 1, 2003, which further promoted the promotion and application of DeviceNet fieldbus technology in China.

DeviceNet is a low-cost communications bus. It connects industrial equipment (eg limit switches, photoelectric sensors, manifolds, motor starters, process sensors, bar code readers, variable frequency drives, panel displays and operator interfaces) to the network, eliminating expensive hard wiring cost. Direct interconnectivity improves communication between devices and at the same time provides a significant level of device-level diagnostics that are difficult to achieve with hard-wired I/O interfaces. DeviceNet is a simple network solution that reduces the cost and time for wiring and installing industrial automation equipment while providing interchangeability between similar parts of multiple vendors.

DeviceNet not only allows devices to connect and communicate with each other with a single cable, but more importantly, it brings device level diagnostics to the system. This feature is difficult to implement on traditional I/O.

DeviceNet is an open network standard. Specifications and protocols are open, and vendors need not pay for hardware, software, or licenses when they connect devices to the system. Any organization or individual interested in DeviceNet technology can obtain DeviceNet specifications from the Open DecisionNet Suppliers Association (ODVA), and can join ODVA to participate in the technical working group to supplement the DeviceNet specification.
