Mountain Day | Japanese Survey Says Mountaineers Are Highly Popular Among Elderly People

According to Japanese media reports, mountaineering and hiking activities are more popular among the elderly. As the "mountain day" became a Japanese national holiday on August 11 of this year, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications of Japan announced the results of the investigation that proved this tendency again. The survey analyzed the most relevant items in the 2011 “Basic Social Life Survey”.

According to the survey results, if the proportion of people who had gone out for hiking or hiking during the year was divided by the age at that time, the highest proportion among Japanese men was 65-69 years old, which was 13.2%; the highest among Japanese women was 60 The age of people up to the age of 64 reached 12.0%. On the other hand, men aged 15 to 19 account for only 6.2% of men and women only 5.0%.

Judging from its 1996 survey results 15 years ago, the highest proportion is the 45- to 54-year-old population, who were between 60 and 69 years of age in 2011. It can be seen that mountaineering and hiking are very popular among the younger generations, including the "mass generation" that was kind to the mountains.

Judging from all the prefectures and cities in Japan, the highest proportion of people over the age of 15 who love climbing or hiking is Tokyo, which is 13.9%. Followed by Nara and Kanagawa.
