Recently, at the CVPR conference held in Hawaii, Microsoft said that the company is developing a new AI chip for its MR head-mounted (hybrid reality head-mounted display) product, HoloLens, so that the device can directly recognize what the user is seeing and hear. The sound will not generate more delay when the data is sent back to the cloud.
It is understood that the second generation of Microsoft holographic processor HPU is under development and will be used for the next generation of HoloLens, but Microsoft has not given a clear time. The last time Microsoft announced the Hololens holographic processor was August 2016. The first-generation HPU chip is a 28nm digital signal processor (DSP) built by TSMC TSMC. It has 24 Tensilica DSP cores, processing 1 trillion instructions per second, 8MB SRAM, and 1GB LPDDR3 memory. The HPU chip is also available in a 12 x 12mm BGA package, which is 200 times faster than a software-based solution and only 10W low power.
