Correct understanding of print color management

Color is the core of print quality control. In the entire production management of printing companies, color management is at the center.

1. Three steps of printing color management

Color management theory divides the implementation of color management into three steps: calibration, device characterization, and color conversion. Calibration refers to the calibration of each device in the printing production process, standardizing the process parameters to make it work in a stable state; device characterization refers to measuring color data through various software and hardware tools under the premise of calibrating the device. The color profile of the device is generated, and the color gamut features of the device are recorded. There are three types of general color profile files, that is, feature files of the input device, the display device, and the output device. The third step is to use the color management module to convert the device-dependent color space (CMYK, RGB, etc.) through the device-independent color space (Lab) to achieve the consistency of color output from prepress to printing.

In three steps, calibration and device characterization are key to effective color management. Calibration is not only a simple correction of each device, but a comprehensive diagnosis of the printing production process and process, and is the standardization and standardization of the printing production process parameters. The key to device characterization is to obtain high-quality color profiles, with a focus on selecting print proofs that accurately reflect the print conditions, using professional measurement tools and professional color characterization file generation software.

2. Print color management is an automated color control process

The printing process is the process of color transfer and copying. The color is converted into each other in different color spaces. The accurate transmission of color is the key point and the difficulty. In the past, relying mainly on human experience to control the transmission of color is an after-the-fact control. This inefficient method has been feasible in the past, but it has not been able to adapt to the fierce competition environment faced by modern printing companies. Therefore, achieving efficient and automatic color transfer control and realizing accurate color reproduction has an important impact on improving the competitiveness of printing companies.

Print color management is the means to automate color transfer and control in print production. To achieve this, color reproduction needs to be viewed from the perspective of the printing press, and the interaction between the pre-press processing, plate making, proofing, and printing processes is coordinated. To integrate the features of the press into the prepress stage, any changes in printing conditions are automatically reflected in the proofing and platemaking process. Therefore, complete print color management should be a cycle of pre-setting, calibration, characterization, color conversion, on-machine measurement, feedback and correction using prepress data. The automatic control of color in print color management is an ex ante control. Printing companies use color management to reduce consumption and increase efficiency and enhance their core competitiveness.

3. Print color management is an ongoing process

In recent years, the author has found two problems in the communication with the printing company. First, more and more enterprises have implemented digital proofing, and believe that color management is digital proofing; second, the application of digital proofing is one-off. Do not pay attention to the sustainability of printing production standardization and the updating of color property documents. These two issues have a considerable hindrance to the effective implementation of print color management. It is a misunderstanding to think that color management is digital proofing. In fact, digital proofing is only a part of color management. It is a system for simulating printing results. It is a proofing method more suitable for CTP systems. Color management is not a “one-size-fits-all” job. It is an ongoing process to achieve automated color transfer and control on the basis of continuous optimization of printing production as printing conditions change.
